Our last day in Los Angeles was dedicated to the movies. After checkout we had breakfast in the Griddle Cafe in Hollywood. They serve ridicilously huge breakfast plates. But deeeelicious. And a good start for a long day.
Again being awake way to early, we drove over to Calabasas, home to many stars and the Kardashians… We had breakfast at Le Pain Quotidien. Calabasas has a nice old little town center and uncountable gated communities.
Being up early again, we still had 1 hour left to kill before our chosen breakfast diner would open up at 7:30 AM. So we decided to drive along Mulholland Drive, a scenic route with views of the cities and great houses built into the hills. We managed to catch the last parking spot at Runyon Canyon Park, a popular spot for local joggers. Unfortunately we didn’t bring our running gear… But we walked through the park.
On Day 2 we drove through Beverly Hills and Belair to see some mega mansions. Most houses are behind ridiculously high hedges, but it was still impressive how clean LA can be. We thought about getting a Map to the Stars, which are sold at every corner, but it’s not that exciting to look at Rihanna’s hedge…
I signed up for several underground dinner clubs a few months ago and thought maybe we are lucky, that a) there is an event taking place when we are there and b) we get tickets. We got lucky, as there was a dinner by Craig Thornton announced just 4 days before our departure. It was called Wolvesmouth Sharkteeth, a 6 course seafood menu. We were hesitant at first, because it meant going out after our 24 hour journey to the US, but it was totally worth it.
This is day 1 of our 35 day trip through the US. It’s 5 weeks thanks to award availability in Air Berlin Business Class, which was kind of hard to get. Luckily we got the last direct flight from Düsseldorf to Los Angeles, but the return was only available from the east coast 5 weeks later… We bought 70.000 miles from Air Berlin for 389 € in their City Tour Pass promotion and another 10.000 miles for 110 € in another promotion. Business Class flights cost 80.000 miles for the return + 778 € in taxes and fees. So in total we got the tickets for 1277 € each. Not bad considered, that they normally sell for 2000+.
