Qatar 787 Business Class

For our honeymoon, the Conrad Maldived Rangali Island was booked and I was monitoring flights via kayak. One sunday evening I got really excited as 925 Euro Qatar 787 Business Class flights showed up.

I immediately booked via tripsta.de, not getting to excited, assuming that this could be an Error Fare. I received an email confirmation with the booking class “Business (U)”. But when I wanted to select seats on the Qatar website it was shown as Economy Class. Apparently Qatar switched their booking codes in preparation to join oneworld alliance and some travel websites had outdated information for one day. So I called Qatar Airways, who promised a solution, but never came back. In a second call a week later, I was told it was tripsta’s responsibility. So I called them, not expecting much, but they honored the fare after one day and issued a new business class ticket free of charge.

It seems like tripsta footed the bill for their mistake, as the new confirmation had the original price of over 5000 Euro. As I read in this post on Tripadvisor, I was lucky to book with them, as Expedia obviously wasn’t as accomodating.

We paid 924,80 Euro per person for the flight FRA – DOH – MLE. Only downsides were the 14 hour layover on the return flight and regional business class on DOH – MLE. But as the cheapest economy class flight on Emirates was priced at 750 Euro, this was a great deal.

Itinerary FRA – DOH – MLE

As this was our first Business Class flight, we arrived at the airport at 7 PM to allow for enough time to experience the lounge. We had great Wine, a selection of Whiskeys and the mandatory potato salad. The lounge was quite empty the whole time.

Boarding was conveniently located directly in front of the lounge entry and there was no wait at all. Boarding started around one hour before departure and we used the time to settle in and enjoy some champagne.

We had a hard time deciding which seats to choose, as Qatar has a 1-2-1 configuration, but the middle seats are divided and quite far away. We opted for window / middle aisle and it was perfect, as we had direct access to each other and enough privacy to the other rows.

My wife had a hard time reaching the foot rest. During announcements the inflight entertainment system was interrupted, but the playback was not paused.

The seat turns into a 2 m bed and you get comfy pajamas, an eye mask (which my wife wears inside out…), a real pillow and a blanket. On the seat they prepare a special bed cover. We both slept through most of the flight.

The old DOH airport did only have bus gates. At least we got to ride in this deluxe business class bus, which was cooled down to the max.

On the DOH – MLE leg we chose bulkhead seats 1D & 1F, which was the right decision for us, as you could rest your feet against the wall. Of the 12 seats only 7 were occupied.
