On Day 2 we drove through Beverly Hills and Belair to see some mega mansions. Most houses are behind ridiculously high hedges, but it was still impressive how clean LA can be. We thought about getting a Map to the Stars, which are sold at every corner, but it’s not that exciting to look at Rihanna’s hedge…
I signed up for several underground dinner clubs a few months ago and thought maybe we are lucky, that a) there is an event taking place when we are there and b) we get tickets. We got lucky, as there was a dinner by Craig Thornton announced just 4 days before our departure. It was called Wolvesmouth Sharkteeth, a 6 course seafood menu. We were hesitant at first, because it meant going out after our 24 hour journey to the US, but it was totally worth it.
This is day 1 of our 35 day trip through the US. It’s 5 weeks thanks to award availability in Air Berlin Business Class, which was kind of hard to get. Luckily we got the last direct flight from Düsseldorf to Los Angeles, but the return was only available from the east coast 5 weeks later… We bought 70.000 miles from Air Berlin for 389 € in their City Tour Pass promotion and another 10.000 miles for 110 € in another promotion. Business Class flights cost 80.000 miles for the return + 778 € in taxes and fees. So in total we got the tickets for 1277 € each. Not bad considered, that they normally sell for 2000+.
I started collecting Miles & More in November 2014. My current account balance is around 94k Miles and I didn’t fly Lufthansa Group once this year. I paid 513.09 € for these miles, resulting in a price of 0.55 c/Mile. A Milage Bargain Business Class Flight to the US would cost me ~850€.
When redeeming Miles on the Lufthansa Miles & More program, you have different options, which all imply different values/mile. I show you the best option to redeem you miles.
Originally we had booked Steigenberger Makadi Bay, but we switched to Kempinski Soma Bay half-way through our 7 day trip for an upcharge of around 350 Euro. And it was totally worth it. We were taken to the hotel by our travel agent in a private car. They tried to scam us by charging us some fantasy currency rate, but eventually we could also pay by credit card at the official rate.
For a weekend trip to Vienna, we stayed in Hilton Vienna Park. We booked a room at hilton.com for 140 Euros/night. Being a Diamond member with HHonors we were automatically upgraded to an Executive Room at Check-in. A friendly request for a suite brought us into a 10th floor Park suite with approximately 80 square meters.
We went to Egypt in January, because it’s the closest beach destination in Winter. We flew there with Condor from Hamburg to Hurghada. It was my first package trip and probably my last one. We booked via HLX and paid 1206 € for one week half board in the Steigenberger Makadi Bay hotel with flights.
We stayed one week at the Conrad Maldives for our honeymoon. Married since summer 2013, we eagerly waited for the high season and beautiful cloudless days. Just to experience the worst weather in November for decades, according to the lovely Conrad staff. It was still a great stay in a beautiful location. We just had to drink a littlebit more prosecco at breakfast.
